The tasks range from lending and user services to cataloging and indexing, as well as digitization projects and the management of licenses for electronic media.
The career path runs via the Federal VET Diploma as a Specialist in Information and Documentation — apprenticeships for this are regularly advertised — or via a University of Applied Sciences degree in Information Science for specialist and leadership roles. There are also low-threshold entry points: hourly-paid temporary staff for weekend duty and student employees, for example in digitization.
Part-time positions are the norm. Carefulness and enjoyment of systematic work are important; in an academic environment French or English may be added depending on holdings.
