Role and responsibilities
The candidate’s work will largely focus on running controlled lab experiments using wild phytoplankton isolates, however there will also be a component of field work to sample Swiss lakes. Data collection will be used to inform, parameterize and validate lake model predictions.

Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, is an internationally networked aquatic research institute within the ETH Domain (Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology). Eawag conducts research, education and expert consulting to achieve the dual goals of meeting direct human needs for water and maintaining the function and integrity of aquatic ecosystems. The position will be based at Eawag in Dübendorf, Zurich, in the Biodiversity & Ecosystem Functioning group.
Qualifications and Skills
completed a PhD in biology, biodiversity, aquatic ecology, evolutionary biology, limnology or oceanography, environmental science or other related fields
understanding of lake ecosystems
phytoplankton physiology
experience running controlled and highly replicated laboratory experiments
experience in molecular biology, particularly the collection and analysis of gene expression data is desired
experience with field work is an asset
strong computational skills
comfortable in at least one coding language (R, Python etc.)
enjoy dynamic teamwork
can integrate your own scientific work within larger projects
