R&D Internship for Magnetics Design in Power Electronic Converter Systems

Role and responsibilities

Extension of a MATLAB-based tool for systematic and comprehensive design and optimization of magnetic components in power electronic converters Design and comparison of different winding types Design and comparison of different core materials Implementation and testing of models. Documentation of studies and results in technical reports Adaption of the code architecture as necessary to maintain clarity and facilitate easy maintenance Collaboration with an international research team and experts in power electronics

Team / description

At Hitachi Energy Research, we closely collaborate with business areas to develop foundations for the next generation of Power Grids products. Located in the proximity of Zurich, the research center employs more than 60 scientists from all over the world with cross-disciplinary expertise. In the Systems Integration and Physics Team we address the challenges and opportunities in enhancing grid flexibility and facilitating renewable energy proliferation. A key focus of our work is multi-physics modeling for power electronic systems, which plays a critical role in fast-growing applications such as electric vehicle charging, energy storage and renewables like wind and solar.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Enrolled in a Master degree program in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, computer sciences, or a similar discipline (completion of at least six semesters)

  • Experience with MATLAB programming

  • Familiar with magnetics in power electronic converters

  • Enthusiastic, motivated and curious with good organizational skills and team spirit

  • Highly conscientious professional with a strong sense of responsibility and excellent communication skills

  • Fluency in English, written and spoken
