SDN Private Cloud Engineer (SME)
📍 Zurich
Role and responsibilities
Design, engineering, and documentation of enterprise-grade virtualised x86 infrastructure, with a strong focus on building agile, automated, and secure cloud environments powered by software-defined networking (SDN) principles
Shape the strategic direction of network architecture through advanced implementations of micro-segmentation, logical switching & routing, distributed firewalls, and intent-based networking policies, enabling granular security controls and workload isolation
Own end-to-end operations of virtualisation and network services platforms, including high availability, performance optimisation, fault remediation, and incident management—with accountability for service uptime and responsiveness (L2/L3 support)
Spearhead global rollout, monitoring, and continuous optimisation of virtualised infrastructure, leveraging SDN capabilities such as stateful service chaining, overlay networks, and centralised control plane management to deliver scalable and resilient connectivity
Execute large-scale infrastructure transformations, including data centre migrations, technology refresh cycles, and lifecycle upgrades involving network virtualisation components such as tier-0/tier-1 gateways, edge clusters, and distributed routing engines
Champion infrastructure automation and GitOps workflows, driving adoption of API-first configuration, declarative policy models, and Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) tools to enable consistent, auditable deployments across hybrid environments
Design and implement robust operational procedures tailored to dynamic, policy-driven networking environments, ensuring compliance, recoverability, and operational transparency
Conduct proactive capacity and performance management for compute and network workloads, utilising real-time telemetry streaming, flow analytics, and visibility fabrics to detect bottlenecks, model growth, and prevent degradation
Participate in a 7x24 on-call rotation (approx. one week per month), acting as a technical escalation point for critical issues impacting virtual infrastructure and network services
Team / description
At Julius Baer, we celebrate and value the individual qualities you bring, enabling you to be impactful, to be entrepreneurial, to be empowered, and to create value beyond wealth. Let’s shape the future of wealth management together.
System engineering is an interdisciplinary field of system and platform engineering, complemented with business management and operational responsibility, that centres around on how to design and manage complex systems and technology platforms over their life cycles. The system engineer can assume a pure holistic role or can be a database, system/server, virtualization or a network specialist.
Qualifications and Skills
A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a closely related technical discipline. Equivalent practical experience will be considered
Minimum of five years’ hands-on experience as a senior virtualisation engineer, specialising in the design, delivery, and operation of enterprise-grade x86 infrastructure in mission-critical environments
Demonstrated expertise in VMware vSphere technologies, including ESXi, vCenter Server, and lifecycle management of virtualised platforms
In-depth understanding of software-defined networking (SDN) principles, including logical switching and routing, overlay networks (VXLAN/Geneve), distributed firewalling, and centralised policy enforcement
Strong foundation in data centre networking, covering IPv4/IPv6, routing protocols (BGP), service gateways (Tier-0/Tier-1), transport node configuration and integration between logical and physical network layers
Direct experience with VMware NSX-T is highly advantageous, particularly in areas such as micro-segmentation, distributed security policies, Edge services, and automation via API
Familiarity with VMware AVI (NSX Advanced Load Balancer) is a distinct plus, especially for application delivery, intelligent traffic steering, L7 load balancing, WAF integration, and Kubernetes ingress control
Proven track record in deploying and managing SDDC frameworks, preferably VMware CloudFoundation (VCF), where NSX plays a foundational role in network virtualisation and security
Hands-on experience in automating infrastructure operations using PowerShell, Python, andInfrastructure-as-Code tools such as Terraform or Ansible, including API-driven interactions with NSXManager and AVI Controller
Working knowledge of storage architectures, including SAN/NAS, Fibre Channel, and file-basedprotocols (NFS/CIFS), to support integrated virtual infrastructure services
Exposure to container platforms such as Tanzu Kubernetes Grid (TKG/IE) or VKS, particularly inintegrating Kubernetes clusters with SDN-backed networking and security policies
Willingness to participate in a 7x24 on-call rotation, providing escalation support and leading resolution efforts for critical infrastructure incidents
Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and capable of owning complex technical initiatives with limited supervision
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively in agile, international environment
Fluency in English (written and spoken) is required; additional languages are beneficial given the regional presence
