What employers look for
Caregiver positions exist in animal shelters and pet hotels, in zoos and animal parks, in pet shops, in laboratory animal care at universities and pharmaceutical companies, and occasionally in agriculture. Closely related are positions as veterinary practice assistants (VPA) in animal clinics and veterinary practices, where in addition to caring for the animals, reception and administration are also part of the job.
The EFZ as a veterinary caregiver—depending on the company with a specialization in household pets, wildlife, or laboratory animals—is mandatory in most advertisements; for VPA positions, it is the VPA EFZ, and in pet shops a recognized short training for veterinary caretaking suffices in some cases. Physical labor, weekend and holiday shifts, as well as a driver's license, are required almost everywhere.
The job market is smaller than in other professions, and positions are popular—those who are flexible with the place of work have considerably better chances. Good German is required wherever there is customer contact: in the pet hotel, in the zo shop, and in the veterinary practice.
