Scientific Computing Systems Engineer

Rolle und Verantwortlichkeiten

Serve as the main systems engineer for PSI’s WLCG Tier-3 cluster computing infrastructure supporting the CERN CMS experiment. Operate, maintain, and improve Linux-based research-computing services and infrastructure. Support and interact with the Swiss CMS computing user community using the Tier-3 infrastructure. Collaborate with the national WLCG Tier-2 center operated by the Swiss National Supercomputing Center CSCS. Contribute to the shared operational responsibilities and mutual backup within our HPC/HTC services for PSI. Contribute to the planning and evolution of future Tier-3 and Tier-2 infrastructure and services in preparation for the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) era.

Qualifikationen und Fähigkeiten

  • Strong expertise in Linux systems administration within production or research-computing environments

  • Experience with automation and DevOps practices, including configuration management tools such as Ansible or Puppet, scripting in Bash and Python, Git-based workflows, and preferably CI/CD and infrastructure-as-code concepts

  • Experience with monitoring, troubleshooting, and debugging complex system and software issues in production environments

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills

  • Familiarity with batch systems, distributed computing infrastructure, container technologies, or high-throughput computing environments is advantageous

  • Familiarity with WLCG infrastructure and services or scientific computing environments is a plus
