Team / Beschreibung

The Europainstitut / Institute for European Global Studies, founded in 1993, is an interdisciplinary research institute at the University of Basel that examines the relationships between Switzerland and Europe from a global perspective. As an interdisciplinary institution, the Institute brings together expertise from political science, economics, history, philosophy, and law, and offers an innovative and internationally oriented academic program in European Global Studies.

The SNF Ambizione project “Droughtscapes of Empire: Food Production and the Techno-Politics of Dryland Adaptation, 1890s-1940s” focuses on French North Africa, Australia, South Africa, and the United States. It looks at how settler societies and capitalist food regimes confronted the challenge of feeding imperial and global markets from semiarid environments. This history speaks directly to the present, contributing to current debates on global food security and climate change adaptation, green capitalism and its faith in technological fixes.
